Netflix canceled The Boroughs weeks after it debuted to some of the strongest numbers the platform has seen this year. The show hit No. 1 on Nielsen’s streaming chart, earned a 96% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and had a cast that most networks would envy. None of it was enough.
The Boroughs was produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things. It followed a group of retirees living in a community who uncovered a dark conspiracy threatening those around them. Stars Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters and Jena Malone led the cast. The series was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, and the plan called for a three-season arc. That arc ended after one.
What the Boroughs numbers actually showed
Nielsen data tells the clearest part of the story. In its first full week on the streaming chart, The Boroughs came in at No. 2. The following week it moved to No. 1 across all streaming platforms with 1.74 billion viewing minutes. That figure represented a 45% jump from the previous week. It topped Amazon’s Spider-Noir and HBO Max’s Euphoria in the same period.
For comparison, Netflix’s The Four Seasons generated 782 million viewing minutes and earned a third season renewal. The Boroughs put up more than double that total and received a cancellation notice instead. Nielsen data also showed the show connected most strongly with viewers between 50 and 64. Interest among younger audiences grew over time as well.

Why Netflix canceled The Boroughs
The production cost appears to be the central reason. Reports place the budget at roughly $10 million per episode, putting the full season at around $80 million total. Netflix reportedly pointed to low audience retention alongside those costs as its justification for not moving forward.
A separate factor may have also played a role. The Duffer Brothers have chosen to leave Netflix for Paramount once their current commitments end. A source at Netflix denied that the departure influenced the cancellation decision. However, reports suggest the relationship between the Duffers and the platform has shifted as that exit draws closer.
How the Boroughs cast responded
Cast members have not hidden their disappointment. Geena Davis described the news as unexpected and deeply frustrating for everyone involved. She noted that it is rare for a show to have its cancellation announced while it still sits in the top 10. The Duffer brothers informed the cast directly before the news broke publicly.
The cancellation landed while The Boroughs still had a cliffhanger resolution from its season finale pointing toward what the planned second season would explore. That thread now has no ending. For a show that resonated with older audiences who rarely dominate streaming charts, the loss carries a particular weight. The entertainment industry’s cost problem is not unique to this series. It is, however, rarely this visible.
