A JetBlue Airways flight from Las Vegas to New York struck a drone while approaching John F. Kennedy International Airport on Monday morning. The crew reported the collision during their approach to land. JetBlue confirmed the incident to Forbes. The Federal Aviation Administration has since opened an investigation into what it described as a rare occurrence, even as drones become an increasingly common presence in American airspace.
No damage found after post-flight inspection
Following the landing, a post-flight inspection of the aircraft revealed no damage, according to a statement from the FAA. While the collision was reported by the crew, the aircraft completed its landing without incident. Passengers on board were not reported to have been affected by the strike.
The FAA confirmed it is actively investigating the matter and will assess the full circumstances of the encounter. Investigators will look at factors including the drone’s location, altitude and proximity to the airport’s flight paths during the incident.
Drones near airports remain a growing concern
The incident highlights an ongoing and escalating challenge for aviation authorities across the United States. According to the FAA, the agency receives more than 100 reports each month of drones operating near airports. That volume reflects the rapid growth of consumer and commercial drone use across the country and the increasing difficulty of keeping unauthorized aircraft away from busy airspace.
Collisions between drones and commercial aircraft remain relatively rare. However, aviation safety experts have long warned that a strike in a critical phase of flight, such as an approach to landing, carries the potential for serious consequences. The vulnerability of aircraft engines and windshields to drone impacts has been a central concern in ongoing policy discussions about how to regulate drone use near airports more effectively.
This is a developing story
The FAA investigation into Monday’s incident at JFK is ongoing. Forbes will update reporting as new information becomes available. JetBlue has not released additional details about the flight or the specific circumstances of the drone encounter beyond confirming that the crew reported the strike during their approach.
