Ed Oliver is grieving the loss of his young son, a family tragedy the Buffalo Bills confirmed today.
The team offered support for Oliver and his family through General Manager Brandon Beane. The organization has shared few details, keeping the focus on the family during a deeply difficult time.
Oliver has also asked for privacy and prayers, according to ESPN and NFL Network reports citing a source close to him. The Bills have not announced a timetable for Oliver’s return to football. For now, the team’s attention remains on supporting one of its veteran defensive players.
Oliver’s family is asking for privacy
The Bills’ statement marked the team’s first public acknowledgment of the loss. Beyond that, the family has not shared additional details. That has also limited what can responsibly be reported about the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Some claims have circulated online. However, those details have not been confirmed by the Oliver family or the Bills. That distinction matters. A family’s private loss does not become public information simply because speculation spreads online.
The Houston Chronicle reported that Oliver’s 2 year old son, Ed Oliver III, was the child who died after being found unresponsive in a swimming pool at Oliver’s Huffman area home on June 28. Authorities had not publicly identified the child at the time of the incident.
Oliver’s absence now has more context
Oliver had missed recent Buffalo practices, including a joint session with the Cleveland Browns.
At the time, the team had provided limited information about his absence. With the preseason underway, teams often have not yet released the detailed injury information that becomes more common during the regular season.
The Bills‘ latest statement now makes clear that Oliver has been dealing with a family matter. That puts football concerns in a different perspective. His role on Buffalo’s defensive line remains important, but his return to the field is secondary to his family’s needs.
Oliver remains important to Buffalo
Buffalo selected Oliver with the ninth pick in the 2019 NFL Draft after his standout career at the University of Houston.
He has spent his entire NFL career with the Bills and developed into a key interior defender. His quickness and ability to pressure quarterbacks from the middle have made him an important part of Buffalo’s defensive plans.
Oliver missed much of last season after appearing in only three games because of injuries. The Bills entered this offseason expecting him to play a major role under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
Those plans can wait. For Oliver and his family, the immediate priority is grieving and finding space to process the loss. The Bills have made clear that they intend to stand behind him during that process. For fans and teammates, respecting the family’s request for privacy may be the most meaningful form of support.
