Straus Family Creamery has voluntarily recalled select tubs of its organic ice cream after identifying the potential presence of metal foreign material in a small number of production runs. The California dairy company issued the warning on Thursday and is now urging customers to check their freezers and discard any affected product immediately. No injuries have been reported in connection with the recall.
The company framed the decision as a precautionary measure. It stated that food safety drove the decision and that it acted out of an abundance of caution rather than in response to any confirmed harm.
Which flavors and best-by dates are affected
The recall covers five specific ice cream flavors. Customers should check both the flavor name and the best-by date printed on the tub before consuming any product. The affected flavors are:
- Vanilla bean
- Strawberry
- Cookie dough
- Dutch chocolate
- Mint chip
All recalled tubs carry best-by dates in late December 2026. Straus did not specify the exact number of tubs affected but confirmed the issue involves a limited number of production runs rather than the entire product line.
Where the recalled ice cream was sold
Straus began selling the affected tubs on May 4, 2026. The products reached retailers across 17 states. Customers in the following states should check any Straus organic ice cream purchased since that date:
Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin.
The company is actively working with retailers across those states to pull the recalled products from shelves. However, tubs already purchased by consumers remain a concern. As a result, Straus is asking anyone who bought the affected product to dispose of it rather than consume it.
What to do if you have the recalled product
Customers who purchased any of the five affected flavors with late December 2026 best-by dates should not eat the ice cream. Instead, they should discard it in a way that others, including children and pets, cannot access it.
Straus confirmed that customers who throw out recalled tubs will be eligible for a voucher to purchase a replacement product. Full details on how to claim that voucher are available on the company’s website at strausfamilycreamery.com/recall. The Food and Drug Administration has also published the recall notice on its own platform.
What Straus has said about the cause
Straus has not disclosed how the potential metal contamination may have occurred. The company has not yet provided details about which specific equipment or process step is under review. It also did not clarify what type of metal was detected or the concentration levels found in the composite samples.
Beyond ice cream, Straus Family Creamery produces milk, cream, yogurt and butter. The company did not indicate that any of those additional product lines are affected by the current recall. A company representative had not responded to a request for comment as of Sunday morning.
