A new free update is giving Mario Kart World players a fresh reason to hit the track together. Version 1.5.0 has rolled out for the Nintendo Switch 2 system, expanding the popular Knockout Tour mode with team-based racing for the first time and reshaping how players compete online and through local wireless play.
The update allows friends to band together instead of racing solely for individual glory. With this change, Knockout Tour evolves into a more strategic and social experience that rewards cooperation as much as speed.
What Knockout Tour is all about
Knockout Tour is designed as an endurance-style challenge featuring 24 drivers racing through consecutive courses without breaks.
Along the route, five checkpoints determine who stays in the race and who is eliminated.
Drivers who fall below the required placement at a checkpoint are knocked out immediately, shrinking the field as the race continues.
Until now, the mode only supported free-for-all competition. Every racer was on their own, fighting to survive each checkpoint. Version 1.5.0 changes that structure by introducing teams, making each elimination and finish position matter to the group as a whole.
How team racing works
Players can now set up Knockout Tour races with two, three or four teams.
Two-team races divide drivers into 12 versus 12, three-team races use groups of eight, and four-team races feature six drivers per team.
If there are not enough human players, computer-controlled drivers fill the remaining spots so each race still starts with 24 competitors.
Friends can join together through local wireless connections or online play. Each team is represented by a color, which appears during the race to show how many teammates have successfully passed each checkpoint. This visual tally helps players quickly understand which teams are in danger and which are pulling ahead.
A new scoring system raises the stakes
Team Knockout Tour uses a different points structure than other Mario Kart modes.
First place earns 50 points, second place earns 40, third place earns 35 and fourth place earns 30.
Drivers eliminated early receive far fewer points, with the first four knocked out earning only one point each.
Because of this system, surviving to the final stretch can dramatically swing the outcome for an entire team. If one team manages to place all four of its remaining drivers through the final checkpoint, victory is guaranteed. The emphasis shifts from individual dominance to coordinated effort, encouraging teammates to protect one another and slow down rival teams.
Staying involved after elimination
Players who are eliminated no longer have to disengage completely.
The update allows knocked-out drivers to remain as spectators until the race ends.
Spectators can switch camera views to follow specific racers and send preset comments to cheer on their team.
This feature keeps everyone involved even after elimination and reinforces the idea that Knockout Tour is now a shared experience rather than a solo challenge.
Connecting with friends on Switch 2
Players can build their friend list by selecting their user icon on the Home Menu and choosing the Add Friend option.
Friend requests can be sent and accepted in several ways directly through the system.
Each system still requires its own copy of Mario Kart World, though players sharing a single system can race together online.
The update also highlights the usefulness of in-game voice options when coordinating strategies during online matches, especially for teams playing from different locations.
With version 1.5.0, Mario Kart World adds depth to one of its most intense modes by making teamwork a deciding factor. The free update not only changes how Knockout Tour is played but also encourages players to think collectively, support each other and celebrate shared victories.
