Kawhi Leonard is heading back to the Toronto Raptors. That alone would be a major story. However, his return has created an unexpected and deeply ironic situation surrounding the NBA’s ongoing investigation into the LA Clippers.
Leonard is returning to Toronto six years after he led the Raptors to their first NBA championship. He then left for the LA Clippers, sparking a move that has since become entangled in serious controversy. Allegations emerged that the Clippers used a shell company called Aspiration to pay Leonard and circumvent the NBA’s salary cap rules.
Tanenbaum holds total authority over the investigation
According to reporter Pablo Torre, Toronto Raptors owner Larry Tanenbaum currently serves as chairman of the NBA’s Board of Governors. That role places him directly at the center of the investigation into the Clippers, Leonard and Aspiration. As chairman, Tanenbaum will help adjudicate the findings once an independent New York law firm completes its review.
Sportsnet’s Michael Grange noted that Tanenbaum holds total authority on the matter in his capacity as chairman. Furthermore, once the investigation concludes, Tanenbaum will have a direct voice in determining what sanctions or punishments the Clippers face.
The irony is difficult to ignore. Tanenbaum owns the very team Leonard left after his championship season in Toronto. He also owns the team that just welcomed Leonard back. Now he holds significant power over the fate of the franchise Leonard chose instead.
A ticking clock on Tanenbaum’s tenure
The timing adds another layer of complexity to the situation. According to Grange, Tanenbaum must begin the process of selling his remaining 20 percent stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment to Rogers Communications by July 7, 2026. That deadline means his role as Board of Governors chairman could be among his final acts in that capacity.
As a result, one of the most consequential decisions of his tenure could come right at the end of it. That decision involves a case that touches directly on his own franchise’s history with Leonard.
What comes next for the Clippers
An independent law firm out of New York is currently conducting the investigation. Once complete, the results will be shared with the Board of Governors. At that point, Tanenbaum and the board will determine what penalties Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and the organization face.
Whether Leonard’s decision to rejoin Toronto has any influence on the sanctions against the Clippers remains an open question. His return adds a volatile new dimension to an already complicated situation involving one of the NBA’s most high-profile players and one of its wealthiest owners.
