Powerful microburst storms swept through Philadelphia on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction across parts of the city as wind gusts reached nearly 70 mph.
The intense storms ripped the roof off an apartment building, partially collapsed another structure and scattered debris across several neighborhoods. Emergency crews responded to multiple damage reports as residents assessed the aftermath.
Meteorologists identified the storms as microbursts, a type of intense downdraft that can produce damaging straight-line winds comparable to those in weak tornadoes. Unlike tornadoes, however, microbursts spread outward after striking the ground, often causing widespread wind damage over a concentrated area.
One of the hardest-hit buildings lost much of its roof after strong winds tore through the area. Video from the scene showed roofing materials scattered across nearby streets while emergency responders worked to secure the property.
Officials also reported that another building partially collapsed during the storm. Authorities began assessing the structural damage while ensuring nearby residents remained safe.
Despite the significant destruction, officials continued evaluating whether anyone suffered injuries.
The storms produced wind gusts of up to 70 mph, knocking down trees, damaging buildings and creating hazardous conditions across Philadelphia.
Emergency crews responded to reports of fallen debris and storm-related damage throughout the city. Utility crews also monitored the impact on power infrastructure as strong winds moved through the region.
Meteorologists warned that microbursts can develop quickly and often strike with little warning, making them especially dangerous during severe thunderstorms.
While Philadelphia begins cleanup efforts, forecasters say the threat is shifting south.
Weather officials expect heavy rain to impact parts of the southern United States throughout the week. The system could bring flash flooding, damaging winds and additional severe weather to several states.
Residents in affected areas should continue monitoring local forecasts and follow any weather alerts issued by emergency officials.
As cleanup continues in Philadelphia, authorities are reminding residents to avoid damaged buildings, watch for downed power lines and report storm hazards to local emergency services.
