Shaquille O’Neal has revealed the one year he believes changed his life forever.
For the basketball legend, that year was 1996. In just 12 months, O’Neal reached major milestones in basketball, entertainment and music while beginning a new chapter with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The former NBA star recently reflected on that unforgettable period while speaking with PEOPLE about his partnership with General Mills.
Shaquille O’Neal Looks Back at 1996
O’Neal entered 1996 as one of the NBA’s biggest stars.
He had already spent four seasons with the Orlando Magic after entering the league in 1992. However, his career soon reached another level.
That year, O’Neal joined the Lakers. He also represented the United States at the Atlanta Olympics, where Team USA won the gold medal.
His accomplishments did not stop on the basketball court.
O’Neal made the NBA’s 50th Anniversary Team, released his third studio album, You Can’t Stop the Reign, and starred as a genie in the 1996 comedy Kazaam.
With so much happening at once, O’Neal said he had to remain focused.
“That was probably one of my years where I had to be focused every day,” he told PEOPLE.
1996 Taught Shaquille O’Neal a Major Lesson
The enormous number of opportunities taught O’Neal how to manage his time and energy.
He explained that he normally likes to step away from intense periods and return with renewed focus. In 1996, however, the constant demands forced him to stay locked in.
The experience ultimately changed how he approached challenges.
O’Neal said the year taught him that putting his mind to something could help him accomplish it.
He also learned the importance of delegating responsibilities while remaining involved in his own growth.
Those lessons later became important as his career expanded beyond basketball.
Shaq’s Lakers Era Became Legendary
O’Neal’s move to Los Angeles marked the beginning of the most celebrated stretch of his NBA career.
With the Lakers, he eventually formed a dominant partnership with Kobe Bryant.
Together, the two stars helped Los Angeles win three consecutive NBA championships from 2000 through 2002.
O’Neal won the NBA Finals MVP award in each of those three championship runs. He later captured another championship with the Miami Heat in 2006.
After 19 seasons, O’Neal retired from professional basketball.
His NBA career also included stops with the Phoenix Suns, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics.
Shaquille O’Neal Took the Lessons Beyond Basketball
The pressure of 1996 also helped O’Neal grow personally.
The four-time NBA champion said the experience helped him develop as both a person and a man. It also encouraged him to experiment, learn from mistakes and keep searching for better ways to succeed.
That mindset followed him into his post-NBA career.
O’Neal has built businesses, released music, appeared in movies and television shows and become one of basketball’s most recognizable analysts.
He has also remained a major part of Inside the NBA, working alongside Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson.
The program moved to ESPN and ABC for the 2025-26 season following an agreement involving Warner Bros. Discovery and the NBA.
Shaq Still Finds Time for the Simple Things
Despite his enormous success, O’Neal said he still enjoys something simple: a bowl of cereal.
The former Lakers star is currently working with General Mills on a competition celebrating passionate cereal fans.
The campaign features brands such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Reese’s Puffs and Honey Nut Cheerios.
O’Neal said he has been eating General Mills products for years and remains a big Lucky Charms fan.
His latest partnership reflects the same curiosity and willingness to try new things that have followed him throughout his career.
From the basketball court to Hollywood, music, business and television, Shaquille O’Neal continues to build on the lessons he learned during the unforgettable year that changed everything.
