FX’s Snowfall spinoff The Drop is coming and it looks like essential television
FX just announced the premiere date for one of the most anticipated spinoffs in recent memory. The Drop: A Snowfall Saga will debut on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 9 p.m. ET on both FX and Hulu. One new episode of the eight-episode series will drop weekly following the premiere. Additionally, the series will stream on Disney+ in international territories.
The new drama comes from Malcolm Spellman and the producers behind the acclaimed FX series Snowfall. It picks up with two beloved characters from that world and drops them into a new chapter of American history.
What the show is about
The Drop follows Wanda Bell, played by Gail Bean, and Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John, as they fight to reinvent themselves in 90s Los Angeles. The city they return to is still reeling from the crack epidemic. However, something new is rising from that wreckage. West Coast rap is emerging as a cultural force. Wanda believes it has the power to reshape America entirely.
Driven by that conviction, Wanda sets out to assemble a group of raw talents and lead them toward something lasting. The path forward is complicated. Music and street politics overlap dangerously in this world. To navigate it, she pulls in her cousins Lamar Kinsey, played by Asante Blackk, and James Kinsey, played by Peyton Alex Smith. She also pursues volatile local rapper Artillery, played by Simmie “Buddy” Sims III, who is already deeply entangled with law enforcement.
The tension at the heart of the story
Wanda’s internship with former drug dealer turned label owner Darryl “DG” Grant, played by Brandon Mychal Smith, opens doors. At the same time, it deepens the fracture between her and Leon. Leon has made a vow to leave the streets behind for good. He is channeling his energy into running a free legal clinic and chasing his own form of atonement. Their diverging paths create the emotional core of the series.
The central question the show raises is a powerful one. When ambition, loyalty and survival all pull in different directions, how much is anyone willing to risk to build something that lasts in a world determined to pull them under?
A stacked cast and creative team
Beyond the returning Snowfall favorites, The Drop features an impressive ensemble. Mykelti Williamson, Nicki Micheaux, Isidora Goreshter, Eric Balfour, Richard Portnow, Zaire Adams, Demetrius Grosse and Quincy Chad, who also returns from Snowfall, all join the series as regulars.
Behind the camera, the show is executive produced by Malcolm Spellman, Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, Trevor Engelson and Paul Garnes. FX Productions handles production.
Why this show matters
Snowfall ran for six critically praised seasons and built a devoted audience by telling the story of the crack epidemic’s arrival in Los Angeles with honesty, depth and emotional power. The Drop inherits that legacy and expands it into a new era. The 90s hip hop explosion is one of the most culturally significant periods in American music history. Setting a drama at the precise intersection of that movement and the street politics that surrounded it gives the show a built-in electricity that feels genuinely exciting.
For fans of Snowfall who spent years with Wanda and Leon, watching them step into this new world promises to be both familiar and thrilling. For new viewers, The Drop offers a compelling entry point into one of the most important cultural stories of the late 20th century.
