Pokémon Go Fest 2026 is live this weekend from July 11 to 12 and it brings a six-part Timed Research challenge called Genetic Mastery. Professor Willow sets the tasks, Mega-Evolved Mewtwo sits at the center and a key decision halfway through shapes which rewards you walk away with. The challenge runs for two days only, so moving through the steps quickly matters.
Here is a breakdown of every step and what to expect from each one.
Steps one through three of the Genetic Mastery challenge
The opening steps build toward Mega Evolution and cover familiar Pokémon Go activities. Step one asks players to spin five PokéStops or Gyms, catch ten Pokémon and make three Great Throws. Completing it rewards Pinap Berries, Poké Balls and Nanab Berries.
Step two shifts to powering up and TM use. Players need to power up Pokémon ten times, then use a Fast TM and a Charged TM. The rewards include a Fast TM, a Charged TM and Hyper Potions.
Step three introduces Mega Evolution directly. Players need to catch 20 different species, hatch two eggs and Mega Evolve a Pokémon. Finishing step three unlocks an Incubator, 100 Gengar Mega Energy and a Star Piece.

Step four and the Mewtwo X vs Mewtwo Y decision
Step four is where the challenge changes. Before completing its tasks, players choose a path: Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y. Both paths share the same task set, which involves catching three Psychic-type Pokémon, making ten Curveball Throws and completing six Field Research tasks.
The rewards differ based on the path chosen. Both deliver 2,026 XP, 26 Great Balls, 2,026 Stardust, a Mewtwo encounter and 26 Mewtwo Candy. The difference is in the Mega Energy. The Mewtwo X path gives 300 Mewtwo X Mega Energy. The Mewtwo Y path gives 300 Mewtwo Y Mega Energy.
Most players are choosing Mewtwo Y. Its Psychic capabilities rank among the strongest in the game and it outperforms Mewtwo X in most battle situations. Mewtwo X brings Psychic and Fighting power with strong physical stats, but community polls and battle site recommendations consistently favor Mewtwo Y for overall performance.
Mewtwo Y is weak to Bug, Ghost and Dark-type attacks. Strong counters include Necrozma Dawn Wings, Mega Tyranitar, Shadow Tyranitar, Mega Gengar and Mega Absol. Shadow Hydreigon, Lunala and Eternatus also perform well against it.
Steps five and six to finish Genetic Mastery
Step five requires players to Mega Evolve Mewtwo, power up Psychic-type Pokémon ten times and win three Raids using a team of all unique species. Finishing this step rewards 2,026 Stardust, 26 Ultra Balls and a Super Incubator.
Step six is purely about claiming the final rewards. Three claim actions deliver 2,026 XP, 2,026 Stardust and another 2,026 XP. On top of those totals, completing the full Genetic Mastery challenge also awards three Mewtwo Candy XL, one Elite Charged TM and 26 additional Mewtwo Candy.
