Coco Gauff produced her deepest Wimbledon run to date this year, reaching the semifinals after defeating the likes of Jessica Pegula and Belinda Bencic along the way. It marked a major step forward for the American. Prior to 2026, Gauff had never advanced past the fourth round at SW19, despite famously making her breakthrough there at just 15 years old.
The semifinal ended in heartbreak. Gauff held a match point against Karolina Muchova but could not convert it, falling short of the final. Muchova went on to lose the championship match to Linda Noskova, who claimed the 2026 Wimbledon title. Despite the loss, Gauff’s run carried real significance for her development on grass.
Tracy Austin compares Gauff to Halep and Muguruza
Speaking live on the BBC ahead of the Wimbledon final, former world No. 1 Tracy Austin named Gauff as the player who adapted most effectively to grass this year. Austin pointed to the specific technical improvements that drove the run. She noted that Gauff’s slice serve became more effective throughout the tournament. Furthermore, Austin observed that Gauff found ways to use her forehand with more variety, lifting it and driving it depending on the situation, while also leaning on her backhand slice and coming to the net far more frequently than in previous years.
Austin also made a broader point about grass court tennis and the way players sometimes experience a sudden moment of clarity on the surface. She compared Gauff’s trajectory to that of Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza, both of whom won Wimbledon titles during their careers after taking time to figure out the surface. In Austin’s view, that same click could happen for Gauff now that she has broken through to the final four.
Coming into the 2026 tournament, Gauff had actually been on a four-match losing streak on grass. The turnaround made her semifinal run all the more striking.
Gauff climbs to world No. 4 after Wimbledon
The result came with tangible rewards in the rankings. Gauff lost in the first round of Wimbledon in 2025, meaning her 2026 run generated 780 net ranking points. That total lifts her back to world No. 4, a position confirmed once Muchova’s final loss was official.
Additionally, Gauff sits eighth in the WTA Finals race. That standing would be enough to qualify for the year-end event for a fifth consecutive year, reflecting the consistency she has maintained throughout her career even during a difficult spell on grass.
What comes next for Gauff
With Wimbledon behind her, Gauff now turns her attention to the North American hard court swing. That stretch of the calendar has historically suited her well. She holds titles at both the US Open and the Cincinnati Open, giving her strong motivation to carry her momentum from the grass into the summer hardcourt season.
