Mona Scott-Young received the Visionary Award at the 2026 ESSENCE Black Women in Music celebration, recognizing a career that has influenced music, television, and business for more than three decades. The longtime executive, producer, and entrepreneur earned the honor for helping shape the careers of major artists while creating opportunities for countless professionals across the entertainment industry.
The recognition marked another milestone for Scott-Young, whose work has extended from artist management to television production and business development. Throughout her career, she has consistently built platforms that have elevated talent both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Mona Scott-Young built a legacy in music management
Before becoming a television producer, Scott-Young established herself as one of the music industry’s most respected executives. She began her career at Radio City Music Hall before partnering with the late Chris Lighty to launch Violator Management in 1996.
Together, they managed some of hip-hop and R&B’s biggest stars. Their client roster included Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J, Q-Tip, Foxy Brown, Ja Rule, Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, Fantasia, and Missy Elliott. The company became one of the most influential management firms in the entertainment business.
Scott-Young earned a reputation for helping artists develop long-term careers instead of simply producing short-term success. As a result, many performers continued working with her for years.
Love & -Hip Hop transformed reality television
Scott-Young expanded her career in 2005 when she founded Monami Entertainment. The company allowed her to move into television production while maintaining her presence in the music business.
Her biggest television breakthrough came with Love & Hip Hop. What started as a project centered on rapper Jim Jones eventually evolved into a series focused on Chrissy Lampkin and the lives of artists navigating relationships, careers, and fame.
The show quickly became one of cable television’s most recognizable reality franchises. Its success led to several spin-offs, including editions in Atlanta, Hollywood, and Miami.
Over the years, Love & Hip Hop introduced viewers to numerous artists and entertainers. Some cast members built successful music careers, while others expanded into fashion, business, and acting. The franchise also helped increase the visibility of stars such as Cardi B, Remy Ma, Omarion, and many others.
Creating opportunities beyond the spotlight
Scott-Young’s influence extends far beyond television ratings. Her productions have created jobs for producers, editors, camera operators, stylists, production assistants, writers, and many other entertainment professionals.
In addition, Monami Entertainment expanded into publishing, consumer products, experiential marketing, and brand partnerships. These ventures demonstrated Scott-Young’s ability to grow beyond one area of entertainment while continuing to mentor new talent.
Her career reflects an entrepreneurial mindset that has inspired many women to pursue leadership roles in media and business.
Giving back through leadership and philanthropy
Scott-Young has also dedicated time to community service and philanthropy. She has supported organizations focused on education, leadership development, and community empowerment.
Her board service includes organizations such as The Haitian Roundtable, The RSQ Foundation, and The GrassROOTS Foundation. Through those roles, she has encouraged young professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs to build sustainable careers while creating opportunities for others.
That commitment to mentorship has become one of the defining characteristics of her professional journey.
Why the Visionary Award matters
The ESSENCE Black Women in Music celebration recognizes women whose work has changed the entertainment industry. Scott-Young’s selection highlights her lasting influence across multiple fields, including music management, television production, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.
Her impact reaches beyond the artists she has represented or the television programs she has produced. She has helped reshape how women lead in entertainment while proving that executives can successfully build careers across several industries.
For younger audiences, Scott-Young may be best known as the creator of Love & Hip Hop. However, industry professionals recognize her as one of the architects behind many of hip-hop’s biggest success stories long before reality television became part of her career.
As the ESSENCE Black Women in Music event returned for the first time since 2018, Scott-Young’s Visionary Award celebrated decades of innovation, leadership, and cultural influence. Her journey continues to demonstrate that success comes not only from building businesses but also from creating opportunities that allow others to thrive.
