Barack Obama is not playing full-court basketball anymore, and he is the first to say so. The former president sat down with Michelle Obama for a People cover story and opened up about where he stands physically at 64. The conversation was warm, honest and far more relatable than most political figures tend to manage.
Obama did not need much prompting on the basketball question. He ruled it out without hesitation. His knees and Achilles tendon are his concern. He said straight-line movement still feels fine, but anything lateral gives him reason to stop. He is willing to take on a shooting contest or a game of Horse. Running a full court is no longer worth the risk.
Where Michelle Obama stands on fitness compared to Barack
Michelle is ahead of him, and Obama said so himself. He acknowledged that she outpaces him significantly when it comes to stretching and flexibility. Getting to her level is a goal he is working toward. Michelle, for her part, was not letting him off easy. She smirked and questioned whether he would actually follow through.
She has recently picked up tennis and committed to it fully. Obama confirmed she has gotten good at it. Michelle also noted that he would need to strengthen his calves before joining her on the court. Without that work, she said, he risked getting hurt. Obama took the advice without argument.

The gym Obama built for the South Side community
The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago includes a facility called Home Court. Michelle described it as a space built for the broader South Side community. Multi-purpose rooms support yoga, birthday events and other programming alongside the main basketball court. The gym is meant to serve the neighborhood, not just the former president.
Obama added that he could picture himself on a yoga mat inside the facility. He closed the thought with a lighthearted nod to the practice. It was a small but telling detail. The man most associated with pickup basketball is now open to something slower and more deliberate. Michelle seemed pleased to hear it.
What this Obama moment actually says
Obama turning 64 and stepping back from running the court is not a dramatic story. It is a human one. He is adjusting to what his body allows and making peace with it. Michelle’s fitness journey is clearly pulling him in a new direction, and he does not seem to mind following her lead.
The People cover story landed just days after the Obama Presidential Center officially opened its doors. For a couple that spent years under intense scrutiny, the candid conversation about calves, yoga mats and tennis courts offered something different. It was simple, grounded and easy to believe.
